 Masculinity: The Shame & Uprising

TBC for 2022

Location: Turner Room, ETNA, 13 Rossalyn Rd, Twickenham, TW1 2AR

What the workshop is about

“Since men are born into male bodies, but not the successful accomplishment of culturally appropriate versions of masculinity, becoming a man is a complex process of learning and doing within shifting sets of social constraints.”

Each day, an alarming amount of men take their own lives, statistics reveal that 90 per cent of all violent crimes are carried out by men and yet a disproportionate amount of men seek psychological support. ‘Toxic masculinity’, ‘Male privilege’, ‘Male patriarchy’ and ‘#MeToo’ constantly litter the headlines of newspapers, journals, blogs and twitter feeds. Both men and women are starting to acknowledge that there is a problem with masculinity, or at least our contemporary constructions of it.

The current state of affairs, provokes the following questions:

How does a world that demands strength from men, yet limits their expressions to machismo, compound the male struggles with shame, neglect, grief and vulnerability?

What has become of masculinity and how can men contribute positively in relation to themselves and the world?

These questions will be explored through film, popular culture, history and honest discussion, with the intent to expand our psychological understanding and effectiveness in the therapy room.
